Saudi Diriyah Witnesses the Birth of a ‘Global Community’ for Creativity in the Arts

A Saudi arts specialist has created a distinctive artistic and cultural experience aimed at building a “global creative community,” discovering hidden talents, and nurturing them within the world of art—by leveraging modern technologies, artificial intelligence, and digital tools.

In a notable initiative, artist Bdoor Al-Sudairi launched “Misnad Space,” which includes a range of initiatives and specialized art consultations.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Sudairi explained that “Misnad Space is a private art studio located in the JAX District in Diriyah. It was established to support development and provide consultations for artistic projects. Its key activities include creating sculptures and artworks, hosting local and international artists, designing programs to support local talents, offering art courses, and delivering specialized lectures on art and its economics. It also showcases prominent artworks, projects, and creative experiences as part of Misnad’s creative launch.”

In collaboration with Sima Noor Company, artists presented their works and experiences, leading to the launch of the pilot digital initiative “Diamond of the Desert.” This online platform brings together artists from various artistic disciplines, as well as creators working with modern technologies, artificial intelligence, and digital media. The initiative aims to create a shared environment that enables the easy exchange of ideas and community initiatives, and it was launched alongside the publication of an inaugural article marking the Year of the Camel in Saudi Arabia.

As part of its artist residency initiative, the creative space “Misnad” revealed— for the first time— the talent of Abdullah Al-Khuraif, whose artistic journey began in the 1990s in drawing, fashion design, and writing. The space also hosts Al-Khuraif’s works as the resident artist, including his creative artwork titled “Breath.” A dedicated area was allocated to showcase a wide selection of his works, ranging from his diverse fashion designs and architectural drawings to interior design concepts and paintings.

Misnad also featured the creative product “Chair Without Nails,” titled “Thabit” (Steady), presented by artist Salah Al-Jandali. This piece marks the first in his collection and highlights the possibility of adapting elements of cultural heritage—specifically the craft of palm-leaf weaving (Al-Khoos)—and integrating them beyond their traditional framework to create authentic, functional products that can be sustainably used and interacted with in everyday life.

Thabit introduced a new concept of solidity and stability by using beech wood alone, without any metal supports or additional reinforcements, forming a chair that is simple yet sophisticated in design, authentic in concept, and distinct from conventional forms.

Meanwhile, artist Bdoor Al-Sudairi, founder of Misnad, presented an artwork titled “I Am Not Plastic,” which was executed at the COP28 Climate Conference. The piece showcased a national innovative project that reimagines waste through a sustainability award supervised by Food Development Company, aimed at advancing innovations in agriculture and energy and contributing to Saudi Arabia’s carbon neutrality goals. Visitors to Misnad can also view the artwork “Palm Woods,” another creative work by Al-Sudairi.

The artwork “I Don’t Know” represents an artistic initiative that establishes a project by artist Khaled bin Afif, created specifically for the launch of Misnad. Through it, he explores the relationship between humans and their innate emotions in art, as well as the missing point between beginnings and the future. The artist describes the initiative by stating: “I was born… or began… in Makkah.”

The artwork “Stability and Trace” by artist Taqwa Baltoyor is an embroidery-based experience inspired by the signature flower of the “Stability and Trace” project for 2023. The work was created in collaboration with Fawzia Al-Khamis, Ghaidaa Al-Saadi, Taqwa Baltoyor, and Bdoor Al-Sudairi.

It is worth noting that Al-Sudairi specializes in marketing, media, and corporate communications, and has extensive experience in developing specialized campaigns in cultural and tourism marketing for both government entities and the private sector. She has managed numerous projects inside and outside Saudi Arabia, including exhibitions and Saudi Seasons, contributed to several initiatives, and overseen sustainability programs across the Kingdom—alongside her diverse artistic creations.
